SURGICAL PATHOLOGY: Partial List of Features Print/Save PDF version or Print/Save full Info Packet PDF

  1. Glossaries
PATHLOGIX software provides for the use of preloaded text for gross descriptions, microscopic descriptions, diagnoses, comments, and addendums. A glossary with more than 800 diagnoses and microscopic descriptions is preloaded for easy editing and customization. The user may quickly add and edit descriptions using Microsoft Word techniques. Free text can be typed in or transcribed from dictation or voice recognition.

  2. Patient Procedure History
The sophisticated procedure history feature searches the database of existing cases for a given patient’s prior biopsies. The results of the automatic search are visible on screen (and, if desired, on the printed report) without additional keystrokes. Procedure history for surgical pathology appears for cytology and vice versa.

  3. Special Stains Tracking
Order additional slides such as special stains and deeper levels for a given case. A report of that day’s special stains order can be printed for the laboratory that prepares the slides. Pending additional slides receive special attention until they are received and read.

  4. Histology
The PATHLOGIX histology system is fully integrated with the surgical pathology software. This significantly increases the speed and efficiency of both histology and pathology activities. Information is entered only once, even if the histology is done by an outside laboratory at a separate location.

  5. Internet
Companion PATHLOGIX software is available that lets pathologists work from anywhere by Internet, that enables referring physicians to post information on new cases, and that enables referring physicians to look up, retrieve, and print past and current surgical pathology cases over the Internet.

  6. Billing
PATHLOGIX billing software and service is available, and billing interfaces to other billing software are available or can be provided.

  7. Electronic Signature
Cases can be signed electronically. The pathologist inputs his or her personal code to simultaneously sign and finalize the case.

  8. Automated Look-up of ICD-9 and CPT Codes
ICD-9 and CPT codes can be linked to descriptions and automatically looked up or can be entered individually. The ICD-9 code and CPT codes are sent to billing software or are printed on a charge list (billing report) to increase accuracy and save staff time. The codes also print out on the pathology report if desired.

  9. Billing Report (Charge List)
The charge list reports all the cases completed on a certain day or during any specified time period, along with the relevant billing information. The date of service for pathology is efficiently separated from the date of service for obtaining the specimen itself, thereby increasing the financial collection rate.

  10. Amended Report Facilitator
Amended reports, addenda reports, corrected reports, and other types of additional reports are generated quickly and easily by making maximum use of information contained in the original report.

  11. Diagnosis Searches
The database of existing cases can be searched according to key words or letters in the diagnosis. If desired, searches can be limited to a certain pathologist or referring physician or a specified time period.

  12. Accession Log
The accession log reports cases according to date received. If desired, the log can be prepared for each physician or for any specified time period. It can be printed by flexible criteria, such as alphabetically by the patient’s last name.

  13. Biopsy Log
The biopsy log reports cases according to date received. The log contains a wide range of information including the diagnosis. The report can be prepared for each individual physician and/or by any designated time period.

  14. Pathology Follow-up Log
A log records the results of a search for cases that have a treatment plan but do not document that treatment has been performed. This enhances communication between the doctor and staff arranging follow-up treatment. It helps prevent biopsies of malignancies from “falling through the cracks.” This feature improves patient care and may reduce the likelihood of accusations of medical malpractice.

  15. Malignancy Rate Analysis
Medicare auditors sometimes request an analysis of the percentage of malignant cases. The malignancy rate analysis helps the physician monitor his/her percentage of malignant cases. Diagnoses are classified as malignant, premalignant/atypical, inflammatory or benign. The computer calculation is made for any time period specified by the user.

  16. Treatment Record
Summarize at a glance the results of a search of the database for all biopsies for a given patient. This is useful to have in the clinic charts of patients with a history of multiple biopsies.

  17. Clinical History, Pre-operative Diagnosis
If clinical history is entered, it will appear as a section of the report at the discretion of the user.

  18. Treatment Record
If frozen sections are entered, they will appear as a separate section of the report.

  19. Special Reports
Fully integrated special report formats are available for bone marrow, flow cytometry, immunoperoxidase, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy reports.

  20. Incomplete Case Log, Including 'Reason Why Incomplete'
Print out a list of cases that PATHLOGIX software has identified as being incomplete for a given pathologist, clinician or range of dates.

  21. Reports Customized to User Preferences
Select from four convenient report formats according to individual preferences of the user.

  22. Image Management
Link images to cases. Put images on reports. Store images anywhere in the organization’s computer network. The user can build his/her own slide library or access others. Images can be of histology slides, of scanned-in diagrams, or of gross photographs, for example.

  23. Database Search for Research
To aid research and analysis of your practice, PATHLOGIX advanced capabilities facilitate search of the database by key words in various parts of the report using sophisticated criteria and desired limitations.

  24. Slide and Bottle Labels
PATHLOGIX prints slide and bottle labels with up to eight lines of information on each label. As this feature is integrated with the main pathology database, the demographics for this come automatically from previous input on a given case.

  25. Flag Cases
Flag a case for any purpose, such as review or follow-up, and later look up the flagged cases.

  26. Case Notes
Make private notations that will not appear on reports. This is useful for making quality assurance notations, documenting interesting cases, and signaling that a case is held for a certain conference. Search the database by key words in this notes section and then easily retrieve cases by that specific notation. This has proven to be a very popular and useful item.

  27. Accession Numbering Options
There are several accession-numbering options for maximum flexibility. A laboratory may opt to have one numbering system for the whole laboratory, or a numbering system specific to a pathologist, clinician, or location. Accession numbers can be assigned automatically or manually.

  28. Turnaround Time Analysis
Reports may be selected for any time period, by any range of accession numbers, by pathologist, by any of six other categories, or for the entire lab. On each report, the number of cases and the percentages of cases with same-day turnaround, one-day turnaround, etc. are shown. Times are shown for all cases and for cases that do not have special stains.

  29. Automatically Fax Surgical Pathology Report
Reports may be automatically faxed by clicking a button on the case entry form.

  30. Second Clinician and Second Pathologist
If a second clinician and/or a second pathologist is entered on the case entry form, the second physician(s) will appear on the report.

  31. Additional Efficiency Features and Services to Referring Physicians
PATHLOGIX software includes many other features to increase efficiency and to provide additional services to referring physicians.

  32. Analyze Quality Assurance Consultation Results
Track quality assurance results. The number and percentage of cases in which there is agreement, minor disagreement, and major disagreement are reported. The analysis report can be limited to a certain pathologist if desired.

  33. Security: Information Entry and Editing
PATHLOGIX software adds to the security provided by the network security system (where applicable) or individual-station security measures by enabling the user to assign the following deterrent-level permissions: read-only, entry of demographic and site information but not diagnoses or finalization, entry of everything except finalization, and pathologist-level permission for everything. In addition, permission to add, edit, or delete glossary items can be restricted.

  34. Security: Log
This feature keeps a log of almost all entries into the system including the information entered, a timestamp, and the security code of the person making the entry. The log can be set to purge itself automatically after a number of days that you specify.

  35. Customized Fields
In the unlikely event that the user wishes to record information which the program does not accommodate, the user can create and label customized fields.

  36. Help Buttons
PATHLOGIX software has help buttons throughout the program that conveniently and quickly guide the user through various screens with instant on-screen information. These buttons can be hidden when/if not needed.
